Anthropic's Upcoming Listing Set to Create a Windfall for Early Backers

Anthropic is poised for a historic public listing later this year, a move that could value the artificial intelligence leader at up to $2 trillion. The anticipated IPO is expected to generate substantial returns for both early-stage and later-stage investors, cementing the company's status as a dominant force in the tech sector. Even before the final pricing is set, the stakes held by venture capital firms and individual backers amount to billions of dollars, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the startup since its founding.
According to data from Bloomberg, the financial gains are already significant at the company's latest private market valuation of $965 billion. This figure serves as a baseline for understanding the current worth of positions held by key stakeholders. The disparity between initial investment levels and current valuations highlights the explosive growth trajectory of the AI industry over the past few years.
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 when the firm was valued at $461 million, now holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion. Similarly, Iconiq Capital made a massive late-stage investment of $6 billion last year, entering the fold when Anthropic was already valued at $183 billion. That position is currently valued at $17 billion, with the potential to double upon the company's public debut.
Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. This commitment has resulted in a stake now worth $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital joined the investor roster earlier this year, putting in $3 billion when the company's valuation stood at $380 billion. This investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital outlay.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently added $400 million to its position, resulting in a stake worth billions today. Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the same 2023 round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach $7 billion.
As the Pacific Northwest and other regions watch the tech sector's evolution, the upcoming Anthropic IPO represents a pivotal moment for investors who backed the company during its earlier, less certain phases. The projected wealth creation underscores the high stakes involved in artificial intelligence development and the significant financial rewards that come with early exposure to breakthrough technologies.
